Charles Village

Closest to The Johns Hopkins University is Charles Village, bounded by Howard Street to the west, Barclay to the east, and University Parkway and 25th Street to the north and south, respectively. Though nightlife is somewhat limited to the three bars, Charles Village Pub, P.J.'s and The Den, the area is home to Wyman Park and the Baltimore Museum of Art. Students are familiar with the convenience stores, Royal Farms and University Minimart, which offer late night caffeine and snack runs. It also offers basic amenities such as Eddie's Supermarket, Sam's Bagel Shop, dry-cleaners and Video Americain. Charles Village also offers close proximity to many great places and events, such as Waverly Farmer's Market, The Walters Art Gallery, The Charles Theater and the Inner Harbor's Waterfront area with its shopping, dining and other tourist activities (ie National Aquarium and Maryland Science Center). Hampden

Equally convenient to the Homewood campus, Hampden lies west of Hopkins, separated by a large park. There are many eateries, including some good pizza places and diner-style restaurants as well as antique shops and a 7-11. A highlight of Hampden is Café Hon, an authentic Baltimorean restaurant, featuring the gaudiness that is often associated with the area. It is an area often ridiculed by screenwriter/director John Waters. All of these restaurants are within walking distance.

Fell's Point

One of the three original settlements that emerged at Baltimore?s absolute beginning, Fell's Point is perhaps the most maritime in character, with passing schooners, pedestrian wharves jutting into the water and bait-and-tackle shops galore. Located just east and south of the Inner Harbor, it is the most popular place to go out in Baltimore. On Friday and Saturday nights, the crowd is young and out for a night of debauchery and delight. It is an area well worth a visit, particularly for the coffee houses and the shops, but also for the restaurants and bars. With several people (up to four legally), your cab ride will only be $2-3 a piece each way.

If it?s a nice day, you?ll find a number of tour boats waiting to ferry you to Fells Point and Ft. McHenry. A cab will cost about $8 dollars each way.

Little Italy

Little Italy is, as the name suggests, the Italian corner of Baltimore and about a 5-minute walk from the Harbor. The neighborhood is sandwiched between the Harbor and Fells Point and can be reached by simply heading straight on Pratt Street instead of making a left towards I-83 or a right towards Fells Point. It is packed with wonderful-smelling Italian eateries. Check out Vaccaro?s for desert, but make sure you are really hungry when you go.

Towson

Most Famous for its Towson Town Center, the closest mall, as well as home to one of the better movie theaters. It is a lively, squeaky-clean suburb about fifteen minutes north of Hopkins. In addition to many permanent homeowners, students from Towson State and Goucher College live there. Besides the many stores in the mall, there are stores and restaurants all along York Road and the area surrounding Towson Commons, home to Borders and a Pizzeria Uno. Cab rides there from Hopkins usually cost $10-12 one-way.
