BALTIMORE INFO

Airports

Baltimore-Washington Airport (BWI)

BWI is the most commonly used airport for getting in and out of Baltimore. All major airlines fly through BWI. You can get from BWI to Hopkins by one of several methods:

  1. Car rentals are available at the airport, but are the most expensive option.
  2. A taxi from BWI to Hopkins costs about $30 and taxis are readily available outside of the airport. A cab ride from the airport to Hopkins takes about 25 minutes.
  3. The SuperShuttle provides door-to-door shared-ride service. SuperShuttle will pick you up and take you where you want to go, possibly making stops for other passengers on the way. A fleet of 117 vans, which hold up to seven passengers each, provides service from 5:30 am to 12:30 am daily. Twenty-four hour advance reservations are recommended. Call SuperShuttle at 800-BLUEVAN (1-800-258-3826), or visit www.supershuttle.com/htm/cities/bwi.htm.
  4. Taking the Amtrak from the airport to Penn Station costs $7. The MARC runs Monday through Friday from 5 am to 12 am. Check out www.amtrak.com for more details on times.
  5. MARC (Maryland Rail Commuter) trains run from the airport to Penn Station for $3.25. Check out www.mtamaryland.com for more details on times.
  6. Taking the Light Rail (Baltimore’s attempt at a trolley) from the airport to Penn Station costs $1.35 and takes 35 minutes. The Light Rail runs Monday through Friday from 6 am to 11 pm, Saturday 8 am to 11 pm, and Sunday 11 am to 6 pm. It leaves about every twenty minutes from the far end of the airport, past the international terminal. It’s not a bad way to see a bit of the city before you reach Hopkins. Check out www.mtamaryland.com for more details on times.

Check out www.bwiairport.com for information about the airport.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)

The National Airport carries the same airlines as BWI; however, National Airport is much less convenient for travel to Hopkins. Residing outside of Washington DC, the National Airport makes for a long drive to Hopkins (about an hour). To travel from National Airport to Hopkins, there are only a few options. The most common way is to go first to Union Station in downtown Washington DC, and then take the train (Amtrak or MARC) to Penn Station in Baltimore (a ride from Penn Station to Hopkins is less than 10 minutes with a cab, and about $5). To get to Union Station, you can either take Metrorail (about $2); the SuperShuttle (about $9); or a taxi (about $12). From Union Station, trains leave for Baltimore very frequently. A MARC train to or from Union Station costs only $5, however the MARCs only run on Monday through Friday. An Amtrak to or from Union Station costs nearly $40 and is your only option on the weekend. Check under the BWI section above for Amtrak and MARC websites. You can also hire a taxi; going to Hopkins is about 55 miles and costs about $85. You can also rent a car, but car rentals are very expensive. SuperShuttle does not go to Baltimore from the National Airport. Check out www.metwashairports.com for information about the airport.

Dulles International Airport (IAD)

The Dulles Airport also lies outside of Washington DC and consequently becomes inconvenient for travel to Hopkins. Most major airlines fly through Dulles airport. Again, the most common way to travel to Baltimore is to go first to Union Station in downtown Washington DC, and then take any of the options listed under the National Airport section above. Washington Flyer Taxi service can take you directly to Hopkins for approximately $120. You can also rent a car. SuperShuttle does not go to Baltimore from the Dulles Airport. Check out www.metwashairports.com for information about the airport.

Train Station

Penn (Sylvania) Station

The Baltimore branch of the Pennsylvania Line serves Amtrak and MARC trains. Trains may offer a cheaper alternative to air travel. The Amtrak runs a number of lines from Penn Station to other cities. It is the only way to get to all of the cities, at any time, via train on the Eastern Seaboard. There are three types of travel— Northeast Direct (the cheapest and the one on which you can use a Student Advantage card), Metroliner (more expensive, slightly faster, and usually can’t be used with Student Advantage) and Acela (more expensive and much faster). The Student Advantage card gives 15% off of the fare. To check the details about Amtrak fares, schedules, and station locations, go to www.amtrak.com or call 800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245). The MARC train serves Washington DC and nearby counties during the week only. To check the details about MARC fares, schedules, and station locations, check out www.mtamaryland.com.

Bus

Greyhound/Peter Pan

If you want to travel to or from Baltimore via bus, there are numerous lines that serve the city. The Greyhound station, downtown on 210 Fayette Street, is about a $6 taxi fare to Hopkins. Buses regularly leave from the downtown station for points north or south. The Baltimore Travel Plaza, in East Baltimore, features Peter Pan or Greyhound service but is farther away than the Downtown Greyhound station. Buses are much cheaper than both air and train travel, but are much slower. To check out the details about bus fares, schedules, and station locations, go to www.greyhound.com or call (410) 752-7682 (local) or 800-229-9424 (24 hour main phone line).

Driving Directions

From I-95 (southbound) or from I-695 (the Baltimore Beltway): Take the beltway toward Towson to exit 25. Take Charles Street south for about 7 miles (when Charles Street splits a block after Loyola College and Cold Spring Lane, take the right fork). As you approach the university and cross University Parkway, continue southbound but be sure to jog right onto the service road. After you pass the university on the right, turn right onto Art Museum Drive. Just after the Baltimore Museum of Art, bear right at the traffic island onto Wyman Park Drive. Follow Wyman Park Drive to Charles Street.

From I-95 (northbound): Take exit 53 onto I-395 north toward downtown Baltimore, then take the exit to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and follow the directions from Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard below.

From Maryland 295 (the Baltimore-Washington Parkway): Entering Baltimore, the parkway becomes Russell Street. Stay on Russell Street until (with the new Baltimore Ravens stadium to your right and Oriole Park at Camden Yards looming before you) you reach the right-hand exit marked Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard (look carefully for this; the signs are small). This exit will put you very briefly on a service road parallel to Russell Street. Stay to the left and take the ramp marked Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Follow the directions (below) from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

From Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard: Take King Boulevard north until it ends at Howard Street (remain in one of the middle lanes of King Boulevard to avoid a premature forced right or left turn). Turn left at Howard Street and proceed about 2 miles. One block past 29th Street, turn left at the traffic island (just before the Baltimore Museum of Art) onto Wyman Park Drive. Follow Wyman Park Drive to Charles Street.

From the Jones Falls Expressway (I-83) southbound: Take the 28th Street exit to 28th Street east. Turn left on Howard Street. One block past 29th Street, turn left at the traffic island (just before the Baltimore Museum of Art) onto Wyman Park Drive. Follow Wyman Park Drive to Charles Street.
